I've been thinking...

I have two different styles of art that I create...

The first being "Intuitive"... I have a general idea or maybe a challenge to work from...Then I pull out from my supply, papers, paint and embellishments that I think will fit my theme...Then I usually create a background first, add a main focal image, then add embellishments and/or text to finish my art...

The second being...I have a definate idea, I make a rough sketch, I go out and purchase supplies and then get to work making my design...

In the first way or the "intuitive" way, the fun for me is in the actual creating...The waiting to see what I come up with or how the piece turns out...

The second way, the "definitive" way, the fun for me is in the dreaming up and planning the idea...The actual creating is a little more precise and less exciting but far more satisfying when my piece is completed...

Which way do you create??? I would love to hear your style of creating!

Hi Amber...i think i am definitely in the 'intuitive' category. I always start with the background and I can't move forward until the background feels right to me. Then I start adding elements and a little story usually develops in my head as I create. So everything I add to a piece has something to do with whatever story is going through my head at the time. And that is usually my process.

Hi Amber, I think I would have to also go with favoring the intuitive style of creating. I sometimes start with an image in mind for a piece, but find it works better to make a background, then find the image to "fit" it. The reason the "planning" style of creating doesn't work well for me is because as the piece develops, it is never very close to what I had originally "planned" for it to be! It really does seem more satisfying to just "play" with a piece and see how it ends up--it can be very rewarding to be surprised with how things connect when you didn't originally plan things that way!

Hi Amber, I'm definitey the intuitive type. I usually start with an image I love then start pulling out things until I have that uhhuh! moment. I find images so often impart a "story line" in that fuzzy place I call a brain. Sometimes I have a vague idea in the back of my head, but most times the finished piece doesn't even come close. ;-)

What a though-provoking question. It's certainly not one I've considered before. I definitely work both ways. Sometimes I do find one thing that sparks my spirit and away I go. But I have piles of little sketches for other projects, frequently with notations on colors and materials, including possible variations. Do I always follow them? No. But they sure help me through the process at times. Thanks for the question--it makes me wonder what kind of role our creative processing plays in my art class...

Hi Amber - I am a combination just as you are. Sometimes I prefer one over the other. I also enjoy crating with constraints. Like a list of items you must include or a with one pallette type of thing.
Have a wonderful day.
